A Veteran Who Served with Courage

[PHILADELPHIA, PA] Homes for Veterans is proud to share the completion of a meaningful project for Vietnam Era Veteran Leon Brantly, a man who dedicated three years of his life to serving our country in the United States Army. His service represents the courage, commitment, and pride of a generation that answered the call during a pivotal chapter in our nation’s history.

Veteran Villages and the Need for Accessibility

Leon lives at the Veteran Villages in Philadelphia, a supportive housing community operated by our longtime partner Soldier On. These villages provide veterans with stable housing, access to services, and a community that understands the unique challenges veterans face after service. Even in these supportive environments, critical accessibility needs can go unmet, and that is where our team steps in.

As Leon’s mobility declined, everyday tasks in his bathroom became unsafe and difficult. Like many aging veterans, he needed his home to match the independence and dignity he had earned through his service. Without proper accessibility, simple routines like bathing became a major challenge.

The Renovation Project

In partnership with Soldier On, we were able to fund and complete a vital bathroom renovation for Leon. The total project cost was $4,200, covering all labor, materials, and accessibility upgrades.

The renovation included:
 • Installing a walk-in shower
 • Adding grab bars throughout the bathroom
 • Improving the layout for wheelchair access
 • Adding a teak shower seat
 • Installing a handheld shower wand

Each change was carefully designed to improve Leon’s safety, comfort, and independence.

We are deeply grateful to Kelly Hobbs Construction for executing this project with care, professionalism, and respect for Leon’s service. Their work ensured that the finished space meets his needs and enhances his daily life.

IMPACT

Leon now has a bathroom that allows him to move safely and confidently, giving him greater independence and peace of mind.

Homes for Veterans remains committed to creating barrier-free living environments for veterans who have given so much for our country.
