For Alma, a veteran, mother, and leukemia survivor, life has been filled with challenges. After battling cancer, her home became difficult to navigate, particularly her bathroom, which posed daily obstacles to her safety and independence. Alma’s strength is undeniable, but she needed help to transform her space into a safe, accessible environment that would support her recovery and long-term well-being.

Today, we’re excited to share that thanks to the support of our generous donors and partners, Alma’s ADA-compliant bathroom renovation is complete, offering her the safety, dignity, and comfort she deserves.

Alma’s Journey: Battling Leukemia and Beyond

As a veteran and mother, Alma has always demonstrated courage and resilience. But her battle with leukemia tested her limits. Though she overcame cancer, it left her physically vulnerable, and her once-manageable bathroom became a daily challenge. Tasks like showering and using the sink were no longer easy, safe, or accessible.

That’s when Homes for Veterans stepped in, committed to making Alma’s home a place where she could feel secure and independent again.

Project Scope: Transforming Alma’s Bathroom

To give Alma back her freedom, we completely transformed her bathroom into a fully accessible, ADA-compliant space. Here’s what we accomplished:

  • Zero-Threshold Shower: We installed a zero-threshold shower, allowing Alma to enter and exit without worrying about stepping over barriers. This was crucial for her safety.

  • Grab Bars and Handheld Showerhead: To ensure stability and ease of use, we added grab bars around the shower and toilet, and installed a handheld showerhead for more flexible use.

  • Accessible Vanity and Sink: We upgraded to an ADA-compliant vanity and sink, allowing Alma to use the space comfortably, without the need for assistance.

  • Wall Removal: We opened up the area around the toilet, giving Alma more room to maneuver safely, especially with mobility challenges.

  • Tile Work and Finishing Touches: We repaired and replaced tiles around the shower area to prevent slipping and give the space a fresh, safe look.

The Cost of Alma’s Project

The total cost of this life-changing renovation for Alma was $18,000. Thanks to the kindness and generosity of our donors and supporters, we were able to cover the full cost of the project and ensure that Alma received the safe, accessible bathroom she so desperately needed.

Why This Project Was Life-Changing

For Alma, this was much more than a bathroom renovation. It was about regaining her independence after battling cancer. Before the renovation, she struggled with daily tasks in an environment that wasn’t built for her current needs. Now, her bathroom is a sanctuary—designed with accessibility in mind, providing her with the freedom to take care of herself safely and comfortably.

This project restored not only Alma’s dignity but also her peace of mind. She can now focus on her health and her family, without the constant stress of navigating an unsafe space.
