James Cotton Sr., a veteran of the United States Navy, has dedicated his life to serving both his country and his family with selfless commitment. Born in Tallahassee, Florida and raised in Trenton, New Jersey, James attended Rutgers University, where he met his wife, Deborah. As they prepared to start their life together and welcomed their first child, James made the decision to join the Navy. Seeking stability, structure, and the ability to provide for his growing family.
During his naval career, James served as an Operations Specialist, working in Command and Control Centers and taking on critical responsibilities such as controlling aircraft, tracking submarines, and coordinating mission-critical operations. His leadership and expertise led him to become an Instructor in Anti-Submarine Air Control, where he trained others in complex procedures essential to national defense. He served across multiple platforms, consistently demonstrating discipline, leadership, and dedication.
Following his honorable discharge in 1998 due to service-related injuries, James transitioned into civilian life, continuing his strong work ethic in demanding roles. He spent 15 years with Raytheon and later held supervisory positions with U.S. Facilities, operating under the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Throughout his career, he remained committed to leading teams and supporting critical operations.
However, decades of physically demanding work, both in service and civilian life. have taken a toll. James now lives with chronic pain and instability in his hips, knees, and back, making everyday movements such as standing, bending, and navigating tight spaces extremely difficult. Recently, his condition has worsened due to a serious issue with his eyesight, leaving him with vision in only one eye. This has created new and significant safety concerns within his home.
One of the most dangerous areas for James is his kitchen. The current layout forces him to twist, bend, and reach beyond his physical limits. Standard-height countertops, low cabinets, and overhead storage create constant strain and imbalance, increasing his risk of falling or injuring himself while performing basic daily tasks like cooking or retrieving items. With his limited vision and mobility challenges, even simple activities have become hazardous.
Project Scope:
Adding roll-out shelving and easy-reach storage
Specialized lighting for eyesight impairment, such as:
Under-cabinet LED task lighting to reduce shadows on countertops
High-lumen, adjustable recessed lighting to improve overall brightness
Toe-kick or floor-level lighting to improve nighttime visibility
Dimmable, glare-reduced fixtures to accommodate light sensitivity

Rev-A-Shelf pull-down shelving systems for upper cabinets to improve accessibility (https://rev-a-shelf.com/)
Pull-out shelving for lower cabinets to minimize bending and straining
This renovation will allow James to safely navigate his kitchen and regain independence in his daily life.
