Howard Hornberger, a veteran of the United States Air Force, answered the call to serve following a strong family tradition of military service. Born in New York, Howard was inspired by the generations before him, his father, uncles, and cousins who had all proudly served. Carrying that legacy forward, he made the decision to enlist and dedicate himself to his country.
During his time in the Air Force, Howard served in Fire Protection and Field Management roles, taking on critical responsibilities that required both physical strength and quick decision-making. His service brought him across multiple locations, including Turkey, England, California, and Texas, where he contributed to mission readiness and the safety of those around him.
Today, Howard is recognized as 100% disabled and faces severe and ongoing health challenges. He lives with multiple service-connected conditions, including herniated discs, significant back and hip injuries, and progressive mobility issues that have worsened over time. These conditions cause constant pain, severely limiting his ability to move, stand, or perform even basic daily tasks.
The physical toll has also impacted his mental health, as the chronic pain and loss of independence continue to weigh heavily on his daily life. Howard struggles with balance, limited agility, and frequent instability, making simple movements both difficult and dangerous. Even walking short distances or completing routine activities can result in significant pain.
One of the most hazardous areas in Howard’s home is his bathroom. The traditional bathtub setup creates a serious risk, as stepping over the high tub wall is both painful and unsafe given his limited mobility and balance issues. The risk of slipping or falling is constant, making it difficult for him to maintain his personal hygiene safely and independently.
Project Scope:
Converting the existing tub into a walk-in, barrier-free shower
Eliminating the need to step over a high tub wall
Improving overall accessibility and ease of use
Reducing the risk of falls and injury
This renovation will significantly improve Howard’s quality of life by providing a safer and more accessible environment within his home. It will allow him to regain a level of independence in his daily routine while reducing the physical strain and risk of injury.
For a veteran who has lived a life of service and sacrifice, this project is about restoring safety, dignity, and the ability to live more comfortably in his own home.
We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Team Freedom for their generous support in making this project possible. Their contribution of $TBA plays a vital role in helping us provide a safe, accessible ADA shower for Howard.
