The Edison American Legion stands as a place of connection, camaraderie, and support for veterans who have dedicated their lives to serving our country. Led by individuals who continue to give back—both in uniform and within their communities. This post serves as a vital hub where veterans can gather, share experiences, and support one another.
However, despite its purpose, the current condition of the building presents serious accessibility challenges. Many disabled veterans are unable to fully access or participate in the programs and events offered due to physical barriers within the space. The deteriorating condition of the rear entrances make it difficult, and in some cases impossible, for those with mobility limitations to enter the building safely.
For a community built on inclusion and support, these barriers create an unintended divide, preventing veterans who need connection the most from being able to access it.
Project Scope:
Constructing an easy-access back entry for wheelchair and disabled veterans
Installing ADA automatic doors to entrance
Paving the ADA parking space because it was all cracked and had holes and was dangerous
This project will restore access to a community. By creating a safe, accessible environment, more veterans will be able to participate in social events, build connections, and find support among those who understand their experiences.
For many veterans, spaces like the American Legion aren’t just about meeting places, they are lifelines. This renovation ensures that no veteran is left outside due to physical limitations, strengthening the bond of the community and honoring the service of all who walk through its doors.
