Community Day with the Blackstone Charitable Foundation and ICL for the veterans at Borden Avenue
At Homes for Veterans, we believe that small acts of kindness can create a ripple effect of change, especially for those who have sacrificed so much for our nation. On November 13th, in honor of Veterans Day, we partnered with Blackstone and The Institute for Community Living (ICL) to host an inspiring Community Day for the veterans at the Borden Avenue Veterans Shelter and several transitional homes across Brooklyn and Queens.
Why Borden Avenue is Special
Located in Long Island City, Queens, Borden Avenue Veterans Shelter holds a unique place in New York City—it is the only shelter specifically dedicated to serving veterans. For those who have worn the uniform, transitioning to civilian life can be incredibly challenging. This shelter provides a safe haven for veterans who are navigating those difficulties, offering them not just a roof over their heads but also a sense of community, dignity, and support.
A Day of Connection and Care
Thanks to Blackstone's incredible generosity, we delivered 50 large care packages filled with essential items like:
-
Full-sized sleeping bags and pillows
-
Hand warmers, hats, and gloves
-
Toiletries and blankets
-
Target gift cards
In total, over $3,000 worth of essential items were distributed, making a tangible difference in the lives of 50 veterans. These thoughtful donations were paired with a warm lunch and heartfelt conversations. It was a chance for us to express our gratitude, hear their stories, and remind them that their sacrifices are not forgotten.
The Power of Partnerships
This event wouldn’t have been possible without the teamwork and dedication of so many:
-
Blackstone’s team, including Ray Hillen, Ebony Livingston, and Kevin Kennedy, who went above and beyond in their generosity.
-
ICL's amazing staff, led by Rosita Marinez and Duane Dowden, and their team, who coordinated every detail to ensure the day ran smoothly.
-
Break A Difference volunteers, guided by Emma Vallillo, whose passion and dedication brought energy and warmth to the day.
Throughout the day, one thing was clear—a little heart goes a long way. Our veterans reminded us how impactful small gestures can be and how vital it is to create spaces where they feel valued and supported.
We left Borden Avenue with full hearts, inspired by the resilience and courage of the veterans we had the honor to serve. We can’t wait to return and continue building these connections.
Join Us in Making a Difference
