Team Freedom Raises Over $10k for NJ Veteran with MS
Meet Guy Saladino, a brave veteran hailing from Clark, New Jersey, who served his country on an aircraft carrier during the Vietnam War. Guy's journey since his service has been one of resilience and perseverance, marked by a relentless battle against Multiple Sclerosis (MS). This debilitating condition has gradually taken away his ability to walk, leaving him reliant on a wheelchair for mobility.
Despite facing tremendous challenges, Guy's spirit remains unbroken. However, his home lacked accessible bathroom facilities, making daily tasks an uphill struggle. Since his time in the service, Guy has grappled with fatigue, severe headaches, back pain, and tingling sensations in his hands and feet, particularly his left foot.
In 2009, another severe episode of MS forced Guy into retirement, further exacerbating his mobility issues. His ability to walk steadily declined, and he now finds himself confined to either his bed or a wheelchair, relying on assistance for transfers. The physical and emotional toll of this reality is profound for Guy, as he navigates each day with courage and determination.
Enter Lt. Col. Jim McInerney, leading Team Freedom, a dedicated group, mostly Jim's family members and close friends. This remarkable running team has a history of making a difference, participating in the Spring Lake 5 run every year and donating to charitable causes. This year, they selected Homes for Veterans and Guy's project as their focus. With their commitment, Team Freedom raised a total of $10,000 for Guy's project, with $5,000 coming from the Spring Lake 5 organization and over $5,000 from Team Freedom.
But the support doesn't end there. On June 1st, we at Homes for Veterans will begin Guy's project, thanks to the generosity and kindness of these incredible individuals and organizations. Together, we will transform Guy's home, ensuring that he can navigate his daily life with dignity and independence.
Guy's story is a reminder of the sacrifices made by our veterans and the ongoing challenges they face. At Homes for Veterans, we are committed to empowering veterans like Guy, ensuring they have the support they need to thrive. Join us in making a difference and honoring the brave men and women who have served our country. Together, we can create a brighter future for our veterans.
