Joe White was a Vietnam veteran who entered the service at just 16 years old. We first met Joe at the NJ Marine Corps League Convention, where he quietly asked if Homes for Veterans could help make the only bathroom in his home accessible. Because of his disabilities, Joe could no longer safely use his shower.
We made Joe a promise that day, we would help him.
With the incredible support of the Marine Corps League John Basilone Chapter, Catholic Charities of Paterson, the Knights of Columbus, longtime HFV supporter Gloria Dittman, and Marine contractor George Khourey, Joe’s bathroom was completely redesigned and made barrier-free.
On April 2, 2026, Joe was finally able to shower independently again for the first time in years. He had his safety, comfort, and dignity back.
Sadly, Joe passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 19, 2026. While our hearts remain broken, we find comfort knowing that before he passed, we were able to keep our promise to him.
The last time we saw Joe, he thanked us for what we had done. Our response was simple:
“Please don’t thank us. This is our thank you to YOU for your service.”
Joe is exactly why Homes for Veterans exists. His story will forever remain a part of our mission and a reminder of why we continue fighting for the veterans who sacrificed so much for all of us.
May he rest in eternal peace.
